The Tesla Model YL prototype, a "long-wheelbase" version of the popular SUV, has been spotted testing on North American roads. This variant is roughly seven inches longer than the standard model and features a more upright rear roofline. These design changes are intended to provide a functional third row capable of seating adults, addressing a major limitation of the current seven-seat configuration.
The emergence of this prototype suggests Tesla is preparing to fill the gap left by the aging Model S and Model X with a more spacious, high-volume family vehicle. Despite previous uncertainty regarding its U.S. release, the sighting of a validation vehicle near Tesla’s headquarters indicates a potential market launch by late 2026 or 2027.
