Tesla Patents Roadster Active Rear Wing

A new patent application published by the USPTO describes a two-piece active rear wing designed by Tesla that can deploy in under three seconds and generate up to 700 kg of hypercar-level downforce at high speeds. When stowed, the main wing sits completely flush with the deck lid while its leading-edge slat hides underneath, making the system completely invisible during normal driving. The system operates in multiple modes, including a low-drag DRS setting, and utilizes a dedicated controller that dynamically adjusts the wing's angle based on speed, steering, braking, and GPS tracking.

The patent drawings depict a low-slung, fastback 2+2 vehicle that strongly resembles the next-generation Tesla Roadster. Beyond performance, the filing places a heavy emphasis on safety; because the deployed wing extends past the rear of the car, Tesla included both a mechanical impact-release latch and a predictive sensor-driven system that automatically retracts the wing to prevent injuries to trailing cyclists or motorcyclists in a collision.
