Tesla officially launched public commercial rides for its purpose-built Cybercab in Austin, Texas on September 3, transitioning the two-seater vehicle from prototype to real-world deployment. Operating completely without physical driver controls, the gold-tinted vehicles are hailing passengers via the Tesla Robotaxi app in geofenced parts of Austin starting September 4.

A major milestone announced at the event was that Tesla’s autonomous network has officially surpassed 1 million fully unsupervised driverless miles. Demonstrating a massive acceleration in real-world validation, over 620,000 of those miles were accumulated in just the six weeks leading up to the launch. Production-ready hardware details were also revealed, including an integrated SpaceX Starlink V5 satellite system powering 4K video streaming and Wi-Fi, illuminated exterior wheel accents for nighttime curbside identification, an exposed 4680 structural battery architecture, and designated interior features like Braille door markings and child-seat anchors.

Alongside the vehicle launch, Tesla introduced a new Robotaxi Interest Form on its website, inviting third-party businesses, fleet operators, and infrastructure partners to purchase Cybercabs and co-develop automated charging hubs. Tesla also announced upcoming demonstration tours across Asia, kicking off in Hong Kong (Sept. 9), Tokyo (Sept. 11), and Beijing/Shanghai (Sept. 18).
